Friends Program: Artist Lisa Rosowsky to Discuss “Art as Storytelling”

Levitan LitMs. Rosowsky’s April 7 talk, “Art as Storytelling,” will include discussion of two of her multimedia art works. “Levitan” tells the story of a French department store in occupied Paris that during the Second World War became a “trading post” for goods looted by the Nazis. The piece will be displayed at the program. “Missing” emerged from the discovery of a database of headshots of children orphaned in Europe during the war, and post-war attempts by rescue organizations to reunite them with living family members.

“Every project I work on begins with research, with unanswered questions, and with what I have come to call ‘the gesture’ as the gateway into telling stories through art,” says Ms. Rosowsky.

Ms. Rosowsky is a tenured professor at the Massachusetts College of Art and Design, where she teaches communication design, typography and book design. She earned her bachelor’s degree from Harvard College and a master of fine arts degree in graphic design from Yale University. Her mixed-media work focusing on the Holocaust and family trauma and history has been exhibited nationally. Ms. Rosowsky’s most recent solo exhibition, “Othering,” was shown at the Danforth Museum of Art in 2023. You can view her work at www.lisarosowsky.com.
