Friends Program: Author Stephen McCauley, “Public Libraries, Pseudonyms, and Valley of the Dolls: One Writer's Journey”

McCauley Book CoverPlease join Cambridge author Stephen McCauley on March 3 to celebrate the publication of his eighth novel (or tenth, depending on how you count), You Only Call When You’re in Trouble.

McCauley – a charmer once named the novelist “You’d Most Like to Drive Across the Country With” by The New York Times Book Review – will give a talk at the Needham Free Public Library on Sunday, March 3, at 2 PM. The presentation is free and all are welcome.

The eclectic author’s topic will be the literary life as he knows it in a presentation he has titled, “Public Libraries, Pseudonyms, and Valley of the Dolls: One Writer's Journey.” He’ll also talk about his new book just published by Henry Holt and company. People magazine described You Only Call When You’re in Trouble as "a wryly funny family drama interlaced with astute observations on aging and academia." The Washington Post called it "a witty look at a better world."

McCauley is a native of the Boston area. His first novel, The Object of My Affection, was published in 1987. It became a national bestseller, and was adapted for a film in 1998, starring Jennifer Aniston and Paul Rudd, with a screenplay by the late Wendy Wasserstein. He has written a total of eight novels under his own name and is the author of two "yoga novels" under the pseudonym Rain Mitchell. Two of his novels were made into feature films in France, and the French Ministry of Culture named him a Chevalier in the Order of Arts and Letters.

His essays, reviews, and columns have been widely published. In addition to writing, McCauley has taught at the University of Massachusetts-Boston, Wellesley College and Harvard. He currently serves as Co-Director of Creative Writing at Brandeis University and lives in Cambridge.

The book will be available for purchase, courtesy of Wellesley Books.
