Virtual Middle Grade 6 - 8th Grade Book Club Meeting!

Wednesday, May 312:30—3:30 PMOnlineNeedham Free Public Library1139 Highland Avenue, Needham, MA, 02494

Hey Folks!  Welcome to May!  Come celebrate AAPI (Asian American and Pacific Islander) Heritage Month with us as we discuss this Historical Fiction book set in the 1880's

Why not join us Virtually this month as we meet to discuss via Zoom a book called "Prairie Lotus" by Linda Sue Park. **There is a possibility that we may end up meeting in person in the Young Adult Room, if there's enough interest**

Summary: "Dakota Territory, 1880. When Hanna arrives in the town of LaForge, she sees possibilities. Her father could open a shop on the main street. She could go to school, if there is a school, and even realize her dream of becoming a dressmaker--provided she can convince Papa, that is. She and Papa could make a home here. But Hanna is half-Chinese, and she knows from experience that most white people don't want neighbors who aren't white themselves. The people of LaForge have never seen an Asian person before; most are unwelcoming and unfriendly--but they don't even know her! Hannah is determined to stay in LaForge and persuade them to see beyond her surface. In a setting that will be recognized by fans of Laura Ingalls Wilder's Little House books, this compelling story of resolution and persistence, told with humor, insight, and charm, offers a fresh look at a long-established view of history. -- From dust jacket.

Books are available to request from Minuteman Network Libraries (https://find.minlib.net) with a valid library card.  We also have copies available at the Adult Reference Desk on the 2nd floor for checkout if interested.  If you require any assistance or have any questions, please email Erin at neeya@minlib.net.

Please note, that this is a book club for those who are in 6th, 7th, and 8th grades.  Although we love our younger and older library visitors, we're trying to keep it to these grades.  If there is enough interest in other grades wanting to participate, we'll look into starting and running other book clubs in the future  :D

The Zoom Link will be sent out a few days prior to the date of the meeting.  Registration will close at 9 pm the evening before the date of meeting.

Registration for this event has now closed.
